Tattoo Aftercare
Leave the recovery derm barrier on for at least 48 hours but no more than 4 days OR if the shield begins to peel off or shows signs of barrier loss or excessive skin irritation. Avoid extreme exercise/sweating or stretching of the area during this time. Wear breathable clothing whenever possible during healing and sleep in clean clothing and sheets. To remove the derm shield gently peel away back over itself while in the shower under warm water. Gently soap the tattoo using unscented soap (we like gold dial!). Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Use a THIN layer of unscented lotion such as cetaphil, lubriderm, or aquaphor. Continue the wash and lotion cycle for one to three times a day for the remainder of the healing process. During this time your tattoo will go through stages of itching and peeling/ flaking. This is all normal- do not pick or scratch at any point. This process is different for everyone, but can take up to a month. During the first two weeks refrain from swimming in any body of water including pools, lakes, rivers, hot tubs and baths. Do not expose your new tattoo to the sun (keep it covered!!!!). You may start using sunscreen after one month and is crucial to always use forever to protect the integrity of the art. NOTHING ruins a tattoo faster than sun exposure!
